FAQs

How can we be more sustainable with candles?

You can consider the following practices:

  1. Choose sustainable materials: Look for candles made from natural and renewable materials like soy wax, beeswax, or vegetable-based waxes. Avoid candles made from paraffin wax, as it is derived from petroleum and is non-renewable.

  2. Use lead-free wicks: Ensure that the candles you purchase have wicks that are free from lead or other harmful metals. Lead-core wicks were once commonly used but have been found to release toxic fumes when burned.

  3. Opt for unscented or naturally scented candles: Many scented candles contain synthetic fragrances that can release harmful chemicals when burned. Consider using unscented candles or those scented with natural essential oils.

  4. Support local and eco-friendly brands: Look for candles produced by local artisans or companies that prioritize sustainable and eco-friendly practices. Check if they use sustainable packaging materials as well.

  5. Use candle holders made from sustainable materials: Choose candle holders made from materials like glass, ceramic, or sustainable wood. Avoid plastic or non-recyclable materials.

  6. Trim the wick: Before lighting a candle, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) to promote cleaner burning and reduce the amount of soot produced.

  7. Burn candles in a well-ventilated area: Ensure that the room or space where you burn candles is well-ventilated. This helps reduce the buildup of indoor air pollutants.

  8. Don't burn candles for extended periods: Extinguish candles after a few hours of burning to minimize soot and potential fire hazards. Avoid leaving candles unattended.

  9. Reuse or upcycle candle containers: Once a candle has burned down, reuse the container for storage purposes or repurpose it creatively. Clean out the container and remove any remaining wax before reuse.

  10. Consider alternative lighting options: Reduce your reliance on candles by using alternative lighting sources like energy-efficient LED bulbs or natural daylight. Reserve candle usage for special occasions or when they provide specific ambiance.

By implementing these practices, you can enjoy the cozy and relaxing atmosphere created by candles while minimizing their environmental impact.
